Yes, best wishes on your birthday Tommy....yes, the BoSox are in the playoffs, but word on the street has it that the Bambino's Curse has been resurrected this year. keogh I might get lynched for mentioning that I think the Red Sox might have rigged their World Series Victory over the Yankees for reasons of desperation, ratings, and gate sales. Right now, I do not wish such a curse to any athlete or their team and I hope they have or will rise above it because I'm suffering a similar fate from The Minnesota Vikings who I fell in love with a long time ago when they had Moss, the unstoppable force who still couldn't get them to the super bowl. I think that team is corrupt too, and I've stopped watching football. Though Favre should regain my attention, I admire that kind of comeback. Happy Birthday once again and good luck for your Sox. The Bambino's Curse will continue . . . HOWEVER . . . he's cursing the Yankees for tearing down "The House That Ruth Built" for some high-faluttin', fancy, gawdy stadium that bears no resemblence to the Real Yankees . . . Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, Mantle, Ford, Stengell, Houk, Kubec, et al.
The Yankees of Today (other than Jeter) can't hold a candle to the Old Yankees. Therefore The Curse of the Bambino will continue but for the Yankees!
Go Red Sox!
PS: Thanks everyone for the Birthday Greetings!

Well crz, maybe like Yogi said about it, "It's gotten so crowded there, nobody goes anymore."

Therefore The Curse of the Bambino will continue but for the Yankees! Go Red Sox! PS: Thanks everyone for the Birthday Greetings! Yea, I can't stand how all of the ballparks are frequently remodeled or rebuilt. The fences and seats get closer and closer and suddenly everyone is hitting homeruns they aren't supposed to if they were playing the older game. I read a book that said Babe Ruth's balls were consistently hit 100 feet further (in distance) to that of Bonds and Macquire, and that he did it in game, not for homer competitions. Then they beef up all of these stadiums with extra seats and smaller fields and they juice the athletes on steroids and change some of the rules around so that all of these ham and eggers can say that they beat the great man Ruth's records. Ruth is an athlete who can lace up tomorrow and still be effect if he were alive today. I read a detailed book on all of this called "The Year Babe Ruth hit 104 Home Runs" if I recall the title correctly. It said there were several fouls that would've been counted as Home Runs today, and that by distance alone.... Bonds and Macguire would not be able to strike the number of runs they have now. The older ballparks were strategically built against home runs, with very long fields measuring 4-500 feet. One of Ruth's longest balls (conservatively ruling out some of the tall tales that have been written) were up to 546 feet if I recall correctly from my book that I read. And he has hit more balls further than 450 feet than any baseball player that has ever lived. I'm not sure if the Yankees would feel too badly about any curse unless it was one that effected their wallet or gate sales. They'll just buy up all of the good players. I once considered this to be a beautiful display of capitalism at its finest but it eventually gets very irritating. The players are at fault also, always grasping for that meal ticket and neglecting substance and a firmly rooted competitive spirit. Strange

Markland, you old sod! Is it really your birthday or is this another one of your ruses?
Well... if it is truly your birthday, let me be the second or third person to wish you a very, very happy birthday, indeed.
My heavens, pretty seen you will be 30!
And a public thank you for everything.
Very best wishes, Fred.

Hey, Clair! We've been boon-doggled! The bum is a fraud! He e-mailed me this morning... "Where did you see that?" You know what? We should send him a bottle of Jim Beam... with root beer in it.
Best wishes, Fred.

Billy put us through this last year as I found on the other Today is your Birthday thread. Billy you need to change your profile. For privacy and identify theft concerns, I would not recommend anyone use their actual year of birth. For extreme identity theft concerns, something generic like 6/25/1876 works.
Happy Birthday in May Billy!!!
By the way Billy, with my best southern drawl and a hearty "hook em horns", I managed to score a couple Big 12 BB tournament tickets from the Univ. of Texas ticket office. It is at the Sprint Center in KC beginning Wed, March10. If watching on TV, look up in an upper level corner for 2 people in KU blue in the middle of a sea of Texas burnt orange. We'll be staying in Lawrence. Maybe we can hook up between sessions Wed & Thurs between 4 and 6 at one of the restaurants in KC power and light district. Or maybe Friday or Sat afternoon about anywhere in KC. Regular Army O is invited as well since Lansing is just a short drive away. My favorite barbeque place is the KC Masterpiece barbeque at I435 & Metcalf but I'm open to try something different. Maybe hook up where ever the archives are for a basic tour.

Sorry to be the one to break the news to you but KC Masterpiece has gone to the Great BBQ Pit in the sky and is no more. They closed about this time last year I believe. I believe there might be one or two other BBQ joints in town though. If RA-O can get released from Lansing, that would be nice For those not conversant with Kansas, Lansing is also the home to one of Kansas' medium security prisons (actually, it may the only one.) The Archives are open on Saturdays now but not Mondays. They usually have a nice exhibit. If you haven't been, the National WWI museum at Liberty Memorial is outstanding. Give yourself about two hours at least. If you leave stay over after the championship game on Sunday and leave on Monday, a stop at Ft. Leavenworth is well worth the time. The Frontier Army Museum should be open...I'll check the times. Be good, Billy

Happy Birthday . . . whether it's your birthday or not. I think every day should be a celebration of life. As we know most of us guys will live to maybe 75 or so. My grandmothers both lived until their early 90s . . . however, both grandfathers died before 70 . . . one who was diagnosed with diabetes didn't want to give up his Greek food, Ouzo, cigars, and refused to shoot up insulin. He died before he was 60. My other grandfather died at 70 of a heart attack because he didn't think he needed to see a doctor. Those old Greeks were a stubborn sort, and I kinda admire that, but still, following your doctors' orders would have added many years to their lives. I'm thankful I have health insurance and can go for a physical every so often and make sure I'm running on all cylinders.
I can understand not giving up Greek food & Ouzo, but you can still enjoy them AND take your medication without a degradation of life style. And let's not forget those Greek Woman who can make you forget anything that ails you . . . IF you follow your doctor's recommendation.

Ah....wish you hadn't pulled THAT trigger...
My first real girlfriend, sophomore in H.S., was a Greek princess named Pamela Tsalapatas, of Columbia, S.C. Had to meet her priest in order to officially date her.
Of course, the Army broke us apart, and my heart, when my Dad was transfered. In the mending, a bit o' Greek will always be in there...

My father (who was also Greek) told me that he had to go to my mother's father (A Greek) and ask HIM for permission to take his daughter out. After a heavy dose of interrogation (it also helps being Greek) my grandfather relented. This was back in the '40s right after WWII when things were far different about how one dated someone, especially in Ethnics circles. In some ways I admire it and in others I would be shaking in my boots if I had to go to a girl's father and ask HIM if I could take out his daughter. My parents stayed married until my mother passed away unexpectedly and my father never remarried, let alone dated (by then he was in his mid-70s) My father passed away in 2004, just before the Red Sox won their 1st World Series in 86 years. I miss him and my mother both and I'm glad I had parents that lived through the Depression & WWII and instilled in my values that seem to be missing in many people today (as I type this I'm starting to get a little teary-eyed about my parents and everything they did for me and my sisters, raising us, instilling the importance of our Greek ancestry and also being Americans and never forget our grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and our ancestry)
I'm checking out and having a shot of Ouzo in memory of my parents and to all other parents of that generation that went through so much and didn't complain about the struggles of living during a period that we will never (hopefully) have to go through again. God Bless American, Greece and all others whose parents came from the Old Country and started life over again and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. I'm proof that they did everything for us . . . and not for them. Thanks YiYi & Papou, thanks Mom & Dad.
