I wish someone would have asked Gen Miles if he would have done it the same way. I think it was apparent what Custer was attempting to do. But was it communicated to Reno and Benteen before he did it. I think not. If it were the plan, then Reno should have held back to allow Custer to advance and be in a position to support. Instead, Custer fed the 7th to the Indians a few companies at a time, and the Indians were successful.
Second, Whitaker was a friend of Custer's, and it's evident in his two-volume set. In his rage of learning Custer was dead, he set out to go after Reno and Benteen. He later withdrew his accusations of Benteen.
I suspect that Miles would have requested parley with Sitting Bull.

Two couriers came up from Custer requesting re-inforcement, and announcing that he was advancing on the enemy.
Miles and Sitting Bull would have had a huge pow-wow, smoked the peace-pipe, danced around the lodge-pole and gone their separate ways....But, then we would not have the LBH battle to cuss and discuss for the last 145 years.
