Back in September 2007, I decided to do a little project of photographing the graves of 7th Cavalry troopers who are buried in South Dakota. I ended up with a mystery on my hands.
At Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis there is a grave for Private Joseph Bates aka Joseph Murphy. I snapped a photo of it along with the others at that cemetery. I then drove over to St. Aloysius Cemetery on the other side of town. Here I discovered another grave for Private Bates. The dates of death on the two headstones are one day apart. Too much of a coincidence.
After returning home I consulted MEN WITH CUSTER by Nichols (1995). It lists Bates as being buried in Bear Butte Cemetery. The newest edition of the same book lists him as being buried in St. Aloysius.
The headstone at Bear Butte lists him as being a member of the 7th Massachusetts Cavalry during the Civil War. There was no 7th Mass Cavalry.
Can you see my frustration here? If anyone has any information that may be of help, please post it here, PM me, or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
