Benteen's Dawdling Aug 22, 2008 8:17:15 GMT -5

Just a thought.
Well, add to that, two more messages to Benteen from Custer telling him details on how to do his job! This would REALLY tweak me, as a cavalry troop commander. Custer is "micro-managing" Benteen, and that is an insult to a senior commander, especially to someone with a chip on their shoulder, who thinks they are better than their boss.
I'll bet Benteen was really fuming the whole time he was out there...stewing in his saddle and not so worried about the correct pace, or adhering to Custer's wishes if he could help it. That is just my read of his personality...I still think he is a very competent Soldier, as far as military skills go (I don't like his lack of discipline in his troop, of course, but that's just the "Pointer" in me <g>).
I'm still unclear exactly what Custer wanted Benteen to do, exactly, so it is hard for me to judge...but those couple adjustments to Benteen Custer sent out to him after he had departed on his flank guard/recon seem a bit petty, and almost designed to tweak Benteen on purpose...if you want to take a sinister/cynical approach. <g>
I suspect Custer was putting Benteen in his place, at several different levels. Trouble was, that place ended up being too far away for the command's good...
Not good to be teaching discipline when enemy contact is imminent...it is a bit late by now, and can backfire on you, as I believe it did here. Poor leadership skill on Custer's part.
