Now remember, Dan, an officers FIRST duty is to his mission, NOT his men.
Custer cannot risk accomplishing his mission of destroying the property (tipis and horses, which will require HOURS to burn and shoot, while simultaneously defending a large perimeter and guarding the EPWs), in order to "save" Elliott and his men.
Sir, I understand it is so easy for me to say get the men to the exclusion of the mission. It is unfair on my part I was never an Officer, and never had the awesome responsibility of carrying out a mission knowing I may lose some of my men. But with that being said, what was Custer's mission.
Was it to take 700 soldiers and kill app 130 Indians mostly women and children, slaughter some innocent animals and leave.
I believe Custer's mission was search and destroy. Wasn't the fear always that if you could find the Indians they would run before you could fight them.Well here was a dream come true, they weren't running. There were a thousand of them ready to fight. He waits till dark, takes some hostages and leaves? Where is that "Come on you Wolverines" Hussar mentality.
Sir, you are the one that stated Custer was in no danger and could move anywhere he wanted, thats when I said if thats the case he should have gone to Elliott. But regardless of that, even if he had to fight his way to Elliott, he should have. That was his mission wasn't it , to destroy the enemy, not to do just enough to claim a great victory and leave the rest to some else. Take another look at your post of Warrior Ethos and look at number 4 again.
