You are confusing me on what level of planning you are talking about. Terry gave Custer his orders and that is the plan Custer was operating under. Then you use a tactical plan attack order for Cooke to Reno. What is the plan level that Custer discussed at the divide you seem to believe occurred based upon your reading of Peter Thompson?
Yes, we are not talking here about Terry's strategic plan, but rather Custer's tactical plan to attack the hostile village. At this stage we can only surmise on what plan Custer and his officers discussed at the last officer's call on the divide. My own thought on it is that Custer was likely developing a plan of attack based on his observation from the Crows Nest of the small satellite camp he was able to see in the area of the eastern lone tepee area at the base of the chalk bluffs. This location would be about opposite the mouth of the South Fork of Reno Creek. I believe Benteen's flank march to the left had as his objective the valley of the South Fork, which Custer may, or may not, have thought was the valley of the LBH. Tunk has brought out the point that Boyer would have corrected Custer on this misimpression, but if Custer's 1st objective was the satellite camp about 3.5 miles east of the LBH, then it makes perfect sense to send Benteen to that location to cut off any escape route to the south. I do agree with Gerry's contention that the basic attack plan was modified upon reaching the eastern lone tepee area and realizing that the satellite camp had been recently abandoned -- one enlisted man described the campfires fires still burning and camp equipment hastily abandoned -- with the new objective now being the main village in the LBH valley.
Are you saying that Reno is not the advance guard until Cooke gives Reno your stated attack order? If so that means that Benteen has no clue from any previous plan, if it occurred, on what is going on. You have spent a lot of time telling us that Reno should do this and that based upon the duties of an advance guard. So either Reno being the advance guard was not part of "the plan" or Cooke was reminding him of the duties of an advance guard? When was Benteen informed that Reno was the advance guard and to move down the left side of the LBH?
Yes, Reno was not designated the advance guard until he received his attack orders against the main hostile village in the LBH valley. Custer would have sent a messenger to Benteen to inform him of the new situation, as Pvt. Davern tells us. This was likely the Sgt. that Edgerly mentioned seeing delivering a message while Benteen was still watering at the morass. At that time, Benteen would be informed of what is going on, despite his developing amnesia afterwards. I don't think Cooke needed to remind Reno of his duties as commander of the Advance Guard, although it is certainly possible that Custer reminded him of what he was expected to do during his private chat with Custer that Reno describes in his memoirs. This would be the chat shortly before Reno left Custer with his attack orders. The same private chat described by others that Reno developed his own case of amnesia about at the RCOI.
