From our Newsletter Editor, Rod Thomas:
------------------------------------------
Please pass on to the Bunkies that the August Reasearch Review is in the same envelope with the November NewsLetter and this will create some delay in the NewsLetter getting to them. Expect within the next two weeks…
Regards, Rod…

Bill or anyone on speaking terms with the management of LBHA, could you recommend that members be given the option of having snail-mail delivery of the Newsletter or email delivery? Mine usually goes into the recyclable bin once read and it is small enough that if converted into a PDF file it would not run afoul of attachment-size limitations (usually somewhere around 2 megabytes) for people with dial-up or low-speed internet connectivity. Those who wish to continue to have it delivered snailmail would still get it while the organization could save a few bucks.
Billy
P.S. Hell, I just noticed Rod's email address so I will send him an email asking the above.

I think that is a great suggestion Billy. I'm all in favor of it.

I got mine last week! That has to be early. If I am not mistaken, they are due around the middle of each month.
Best wishes, Fred.

My November newsletter arrived today. My wife layed it on the table and later spilled water on the table. She didn't realize it got wet and all the pages stuck together. Most of it is unreadable now after pulling the pages apart.

Got my February Newsletter today. Good article by Fred on and Gray and Blue. Since he mentions the Dawdling thread had 75 pages, he must have written it on Jan 12, 2010.
I understand the problems and issues. We've been deeply involved with the Santa Fe Trail Association since it inception. Same issues and problems, particularly with youth. A problem beginning with our forefathers on down, young people are just less and less wanting to be involved in organizations.
The Oregon & California Trail Association (OCTA), the SFTA, and others petitioned Congress back in the 80's and Congress established the National Historic Trails division of the NPS who partner with the various associations. Key to this is the partnership between the NPS and the organization. The NPS provides funding and the weight of the NPS historical preservation services to help the SFTA over the rough spots. They recently funded a grant to our Quivira Chapter to put up roadside signs marking the SFT through our 3 counties in Central Kansas. Our part includes going out and driving sign posts and bolting up signs. Hope to get it done by this summer. I tore a rotator cuff and I'm not sure I can drive too many posts now.
My wife is the chair of the membership committee of the SFTA as well as the president of the Quivira chapter (I used to be). I know all about the issues of organizations attracting members. We also publish a chapter newsletter every month or so. If anyone wants to see it, I can email a copy in pdf. 12 pages double sided on 6 pieces of 20# paper can be folded in half and mailed for a 44 cent stamp. She printed the bylaws to be changed so an extra couple pages got added this time requiring another 17 cent stamp since it went over 1 ounce. We print in on a black and white lazer printer for about 2 cents a page. Tried it one month with a color inkjet but the price per page jumped up too high to do all the time since I am donating the printing.
One difference between the LBHA and the SFTA is that we have chapters spaced along the trail with separate chapter organizations. Similar to round tables I suppose. Maybe the LBHA needs to set up their own roundtables. The SFTA has many historians and authors available for public speaking at meetings. We just had a meeting last Thursday which I want to post about on another thread here when I get time as it is pertinent. Each chapter has their own historians as well. I have put together 2 different presentations, one on the chronological history of the SFT and how it ties in with other historical events such as the CW, the railroad, and NA uprising & treaties; and the other is through all the research I've done on the Stone Corral and Camp Grierson at the Little Arkansas crossing of the SFT. There are a number of people who are into First Person reenactments of various western celebrities such as Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane, Marian Sloan Russell, and many others. Many women are into it as well. We have someone coming from the KC area to do one of those in the near future. We move the chapter meetings around to different cities and we also promote/hit people up to join the association and chapter. Most of the newspapers and radio stations will publish and announce events for free being held by non profit organizations. It also helps to do them at a place where we can have a meal. The association had a bunch of books donated to it on the records and maps of the old santa fe trail. A 147 page hard back book which we are giving away with new memberships. Something for the LBHA to think about as well. They have plenty of authors who can donate some type of publication for such a thing. I'd like to see the LBHA put together all their previous newsletters and reviews (absent the messages and announcements) and publish it in a booklet. Scan, cut, paste, and copy, can't be too difficult. Maybe offer it at a discounted price to new members. I'd be interested in it no matter what.
As Fred said, Write! Demand! Contribute!
I think most people are scared away cause all we are doing is rehashing old material. Well, that's about all any of the book authors have been doing. That and they think it has to be a book. For the newsletter, you don't want it to be more than one or two pages. Maybe focus on a fine point like the weather that day, gaits of horses, or the color of Libbie's drawers(right up my alley).
Tokeca Wanji could sure contribute with some drawings starting with his rendition of Keogh as soon as he does it. Even write a little about him. Tokeca Wanji, this is a challenge to you, with a little guidance you can be doing something constructive with your talents for the betterment of mankind.
Vote for your favorite 4 directors. The card is in the envelope.

Zekesgirl,
Ship an e-mail off to Dale Kosman; he will respond very quickly.
I agree with Britt about all the re-hashing, but then that's all history and historical subjects really are, aren't they? There is a finite beginning and a finite end, and eventually you haver discussed every aspect of that event.
It is no different here, on these boards, except it seems someone always comes up with a new angle, a new idea, a new take on something. There is no hiatus, not when you have people like "rch," Clair, and so many others. Then you have some of the newer people... Has anyone paid any attention to the number of daily posts and the number of members listed as signing in in the last 24 hours?
Now... what can we do to get some of you to write for the Research Review or even the "Nesletter"?
And Britt... exactly right: January 12. Good call.
Best wishes, Fred.

Got my March newsletter today. Rod Thomas has resigned as newsletter editor and the new one is Joan Croy. Welcome Joan. Zekesgirl is listed as a new member. Welcome Z-girl.
How many fathers did GAC have? It has a pic of the house where Emanuel & Maria Custer and kids lived with Emanual living there in 76. It has a pic of the Nevin Custer house and then calls him Father Custer. bc
