HI, I'm trying to determine whether a family legend is true. The story is that during the Battle of Washita Ben Clark rescued a little girl and adopted her. That little girl was named Margaret Clark, born February 1, 1863, in Oklahoma Indian Territory. She is my great-great-grandmother and was a Cheyenne Indian. This story was passed from Margaret's daughter (my great-grandmother) to her daughter (my grandmother) and on to me. I've found a couple of genealogy websites where other descendants of Margaret Clark tell versions of this story. In some versions, Ben Clark rescued her and had his sister (or possibly sister-in-law) raise her.
Margaret Clark would have been about 5 years old during the Battle of Washita.
I've also read that Ben Clark had a Cheyenne wife and I wonder if it is possible that Margaret was his biological child.
