I like Maguire's map also for it shows exactly what Thompson, Martin, and Curley state they observed and did at certain locations. Curley states he saw troopers ride straight across and up the other side. He also states he saw the gray horses turn and move down toward MTF. He departs and heads east and a little north an observes from a safe distance. Martin is with Custer so I believe it is E,F, and HQ moving down MTC. They reach approximately 600 yards from the ford places at MTF. Martin is sent back and he cuts across country looking at the east side of Weir as a guide. Thompson then sees the action around MTC, MTF, and Deep Coulée. I believe E,F and HQ head north without crossing at Ford B.
Some if not all take the western travel corridor which is shown on the Maguire map. Maguire makes his map without the confusion of Sweet's marker placement. He is there in real time so not only is there bodies but the potential for actual tracks of shod horses to look at. That line on the western corridor is only visible as a line from the air. On the ground you can not see all the markers from any one location. When they reach Deep Ravine they turn and head west without cross at that junction. The markers on the other side represent the retrograde from Cemetery Ride into Cemetery Ravine and then into Deep Ravine. I suspect they were attempting to go back the way they came as shown on Maguire's map. Falling into the deep gully part of Deep Ravine was not planned and it is where they ended. There is a ford below Deep Ravine and it was near where I believe sacred items where present.
Off to advance firearms training for our new class of officers. Three days of handgun (Sig P320), shotgun (Remington 870), and rifle (M&P AR15).
