For those of you who always wanted to "Join the Cavalry"...here's your chance. A Cavalry Fantasy Camp will be held in Northern Virginia May 1st to May 4th 2008. No previous experience required. You will wear the uniform, use the weapons, do the drill, go on a patrol, and of course you will be on a horse.
This is a great opportunity for the the cavalry junkie/Custer groupie/historian/civil war buff to feel what it was like to be in the cavalry.
I would love to do something like that! Only problem is, I'm 6'6" and I don't think they make a McClellan saddle with stirrups long enough for my legs. Back when they were making the movie, "Son of the Morning Star" they sent out a casting call to all re-enactors that were interested in being part of that great movie throughout the US and Canada. IIRC, one of the called for stipulations was that you could not be any taller than 5'9" in height.
From what I read about the making of the film, it turned out being a re-enactor's dream job. You got to spend the whole day in the saddle, playing cowboys and Indians the whole summer long, banging away at each other with real firearms and camping out and partying under the stars each night.
