Bill:
If that "us" still includes Fred, I DEMAND that you post a photo of him later that day, or on the next. Assuming that you guys are riding from the divide crossing to Reno's Ford, or thereabouts, and that he makes it the whole distance . See if you can get him to trot the entire time, as a test of his "speed" theory - if he's still holding to it.
And Fred - I want a personal Email recounting your experiences on the ride; and no extra padding on your saddle.
Regards,
Gordie

As of right now, that includes me. And Gordie, you shall have your photo, though the period uniform is not in the cards... at least not on this trip.
Happy New Year, one and all,
Very best wishes, Fred.

Happy New Year, one and all, Very best wishes, Fred. Fredricko!!! You still exist? I thought the snows of NY had frozen you as that was the only reason I could think of you being silent for so long ;D I'll call later, be good. Happy New Year! Billy

Happy New Year, Billy!
When Lisa and I (and Emma makes 3... well... 2 1/2 anyway) left New York at 6 a.m. this morning, it was 13 degrees outside... heaven only knows what the wind-chill made it.
As we moved south, it reached 47 in northern South Carolina... and then I called it quits for the evening. Talk to you soon.
Very best wishes, Fred.

Fred and others, I have the lbh trip on the calendar, first step. It will be June before I set anything into stone. I want to do any horse riding I can. A look in the Ford D area is also a must. I'll bring my 20x60 binocs, among others, and spotting scope also. A long range laser and a set of navy big eyes would be nice if someone had them.
Guess we ought to plan the logistics and equipment. Cell phones and any other commo gear/radios someone might have. Might need a backup out there in the sticks. Plant a few guidons/vehicles for reference points. Maybe the spouses can get involved by participating in the observations such as drive around the Reno area while other observe from various points on the bluffs, and vice versa, for Derudio's view among others.
Once we know who is going and what dates, then we need a battle plan to attack the lbh so everyone's time is best used. Start with a list and order of objectives, etc. After a basic site seeing tour, then start at the Crow's nest or whereever. I'll place myself under Fred's command (or anyone else for that matter)
Guess I'm waiting to see what both conferences are putting together for speakers and field trips to finally determine my attendance. Just a balancing between time best spent on the battlefield and time listening to speakers which may be interesting to my wife.
We have for years been planning a trip to Calgary, Banff National Park, and points between with the usual stop at LBH. My wife will not want to trapse around the lbh in the manner in which I want to and neither will she want to sit around at a motel or in the car while I do so for over a week and a half. So during that mid week between the conferences, I am planning a 600+ mile excursion up to Banff and possibly other places. She is a historical and Custer scholar long before me but she doesn't really care about the battle fine points we are discussing. She will humor me but I need to humor her and besides we both want to see Banff. The original trip would have encompassed Banff and then going over, or vice versa, to the Pacific northwest, Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, etc. We could save the northwest for another time when we could make a stab at Alaska and/or do an Alaskan cruise.

bc:
Make sure you get to Lake Louise, and if you can do the Banff-Jasper Highway you will be in for a treat. The Columbia Icefield is worth a visit; but it sounds like you wont have that much time yo explore.
You should check out the costs for Alaska cruises - they are dirt cheap right now. The best times to go are when the cruise lines are repositioning their ships - you can probably find details online, or through your local travel agent.
When you're at LBH - look out for my friend Stan the Zupe. He wont have wheels.
Regards,
Gordie

Is there any news about the schedule for the 2009 conference? I'm trying to plan my vacation around it. Can't make any motel reservations till I know which nights we are dealing with.
Just went through the latest newsletter and conference registration form. Nowhere does it say when and where the bus tour/scratch that and make it field trip is, who is leading it, and what they plan to see. Half day or all day? Starts Sunday the 21st. Is that beginning at 8:00 am or is that registration and reception starting around 6:00 pm like the North Platte conference? Ends on Tuesday the 23rd, is that morning or evening? When is the banquet/dinner/meeting?
The main website doesn't say anything about the 2009 conference. The newsletter wrote about the great speakers we are going to have. Sure would like to know their speaking schedule to make sure my morning constitutionals don't interfere with something special.
Where is Halsey, the world wonders.

I was going to ask the same questions, assuming that the newsletter would have had the info - but apparently not.
Is it permissible for non-members to take the "field trip" perhaps as a guest of a member? To attend the speakers' talks? Steal desserts from the meeting rooms?

Would like the info also. I've been holding off making reservations. Need something on the web site or an email with the details now.

Here's how this deal usually works-- and I'm doing it only from what I saw in Hagerstown in July, 2008. I assume it will be the same basic thing.
The conference actually starts on Saturday, June 20, though the re-ride (which I will not be making because of other scheduling problems I am running into) is on Friday, the 19th. The only scheduled "meetings" of sorts, I am guessing, will be an open board meeting-- probably Sunday evening; the seminars, probably on Tuesday; and the banquet, the last scheduled event, Tuesday evening. I am sure there will be all sorts of field trips on Sunday and Monday.
Wednesday is an "off" day, the day between conferences, and then on Thursday, June 25, the CBHMA conference begins.
None of this is "official"-- except the dates-- but I'll bet you a dollar to a donut you can pretty much bank on this as the schedule.
I will tell you this much... I hate conferences, but this one was one heck of a lot of fun and being at and near the LBH will only make it that much more interesting and exciting.
Best wishes, Fred.

The North Platte conference started on a Thursday with an optional guided tour of Buffalo Bill's ranch for those that arrived early that day to attend if the wanted. The actual conference started Thursday evening with a registration and a general get together in a conference room with plenty of snacks/sandwiches/hot food(wished I would have known about the snacks before buying supper). We arrived Thursday evening and checked in. Friday was the bus tour to the buffalo hunt campsite which took most of the day.(unless I have my day switched, I don't remember) Friday evening on our own and check out the bookstore. Saturday all day was speakers with the banquet /meeting on Saturday night. That ended the conference. Sunday morning we checked out and there was an optional organized drive to tour of a couple battle sites in Nebraska and Colorado for those driving that way.
If it is organized like North Platte, then the actual nights to reserve in the motel would be the 21st and 22nd of June. Check in sometime after noon of the 21st and check out the morning of the 23rd. Guess I'm looking for confirmation on the dates we need to reserve in the motel along with a general outline of the activities. Don't really care about scheduling to the minute every day at this point. Even if speakers were scheduled on the 23rd, I assume they have a noon checkout time. June 21 to 23 doesn't give us an H-hour or D-day for that matter.
Gordie, my recollection is that guests are allowed but the price is built in so they pay for a $30 membership anyway. Stan just as well bite the bullet on the membership. They they get the free coffee cup or grave marker or whatever knick-knack they are handing out.

Thank you all for the info, you guys, even if it could not be more than generic. Somehow I had an idea that Fred might find a scheduling conflict that would prevent his galloping down Ash Creek and over the hills to Battle Ridge. I'd have found one too, even without the galloping. The last long ride I took, my ass was okay, but my legs had turned to jelly when I dismounted [and almost fell over]. I had to sit down, for a coffee, naturally.
I'll pass along anything else of interest. I hope you all will enjoy your stays.
Britt, I hope that you can find the real dates fairly soon, so that you don't wind up camped beside those sheep-pens you mentioned.
Regards,
Gordie

God is gonna strike me dead for this, but the scheduling business is the truth, complicated by my wife. It seems she read a Rod Thomas e-mail that talked about rattlesnakes along the way. Well, the Hammers of Thor are nothing compared to the Lunacy of Lisa when it comes to stuff like that and with visions of rearing and careening horses, bucking, throwing and galloping off to Never-Never Land, she immediately put down the proverbial foot and utterly and completely demanded I not go. Normally, that's just water on this duck's back, but if you knew what she and I had gone through to be husband and wife... well, even the most jaded of you bums would probably understand. And the scheduling conflict is real. The guys I met out there in June, 2007, have put together an itinerary. We arrive on the 18th and they had planned on heading out immediately for Fort Lincoln, something we all wanted to do and something only one of us has ever done ("treasuredude"). We planned on spending 3 days doing that, then returning for the last part of the LBHA conference, scouting out Custer's route up the Rosebud on the way.
From there, we have made arrangements to walk from Ford A to Reno's skirmish line and the timber, ostensibly to test out this business I have written about and that is currently being discussed on another thread, "Reno's Timber."
So, the bottom line is that the re-ride is at the worst time and would mean we'd have to cancel the Fort Lincoln trip, especially the way we have things planned for some interim time.
There... I've come clean. My breast has been bared. Knock yourselves out.
Best wishes, even to all you gigglers out there, Fred.
